While some people may like to call themselves ‘sun gods‘ or sun goddesses‘, other people like myself, tend to either be one of the two following colours during the summer; Porcelain ghost white or lobster red. Living in Ireland, this summer had been quite cloudy, unfortunately, meaning that I have yet to tan. Until last week when the sun actually came out for once and decided to grace Ireland with heat. Crowds rushed to the beaches to try and get that golden tan that the media seems to love. I’m quite a sceptic of the sun and I fear getting burnt, so I tend to cover myself in the highest coverage sun lotion possible and then use after-sun afterwards. This worked for me for the majority of the weather. Until one cloudy day when I managed to get burnt on my arm and my chest. Now, I had quite protective clothes on and sun lotion- even though it was not sunny out- but somehow I managed to get burnt.
Fearing the worst, once I realised I was burnt I quickly tried to ease the burning and prevent future peeling of my sore skin. I was successful. Keep on reading down below for how I managed to look after my skin.
The first step of healing burnt skin is to cool the skin down. This can be done quite easily but it may take a long time. For those who have time, a long soak in a bath of cold water could do for this bit. But I did not have such time. I have a busy day and I had to do things as I cooled down my skin. So instead, I got a couple of washcloths and wet them before placing them onto my burnt skin. This action would give me instant relief, but it would only help for a while so I had to keep on putting them and taking them off. I also took some painkillers to help with the pain as it felt like my skin was on fire.
The next step was moisturising the skin. This step is very important as it locks water into the skin and helps to prevent dehydration. I would recommend either natural yoghurt or Aloe Vera gel for this step. Both are very cooling to the skin. Unfortunately, I had neither of these at home so I had to resort to other tactics. Instead, I used an Aveeno fragrance-free ‘Daily Moisturising Lotion’ before applying the Vaseline ‘Spray and Go body moisturiser’ over the Aveeno one. This moisturiser by Vaseline has Aloe Vera in it and really helped the healing process.
I still had very bad pain in my arm by the end of the day and after complaining to a close of mine, she recommended that I soak two green tea bags in cold water for 5-10 seconds before dabbing them over my arm for ten minutes to cool the skin and help it. It’s an old Indian healing recipe, and I’m pretty sure it worked. I didn’t have any more pain in my arm since I tried that. Anything I did was drink plenty of water as it is very easy to become dehydrated after coming sunburnt so that was important to me too.
