May Update

Hey friends, the blogging vibes have come my way and I’m once again trying to get into the habits of a good blogger, student, person, and human in general.

May is a big month for me because I have seven exams!!! I’m also turning the big 21 at the end of May too (after my exams thankfully).

Seeing as it is the first day of May, I thought it be nice to have a chat and talk about where I am in life, and what my goals are for the future (no just goals for May, but in general). I read somewhere that writing down goals makes you 40% more likely to actually succeed in said goals. While I’m sure that stat referred to physically writing goals down on paper, I felt it could work electronically as well.

My blog

First of all, it’s probably best to talk about my plans as a blogger, seeing as anyone who will bother to read this post will most likely be someone else who also has a blog.

One of the main things with this blog, is that I am planning in the future to take my blog to the next level. I feel like I am currently at a stalemate.

I don’t spend enough time on this blog yet I feel regretful that I didn’t research other servers when first setting up this blog.

For this reason, I often struggle to write on this blog as I feel I might be better off starting from scratch elsewhere. Yet I feel as if I should be writing. I also don’t want to jump the gun and invest in a paid plan on another site when I may never have any guarantee of being able to commit to such a plan.

University

I guess the next stalemate in my life would be my education.

For anyone who doesn’t know, I am currently doing an undergrad in Politics and History, which I adore. I love both of my subjects and I have a year left in my actual degree before I graduate. However I have one question in particular which has been haunting me for the past few months, which everyone I know has been asking me (friends and family included).

“Are you doing a masters?”

I have no clue about that question.

What masters would I even do if I decide to do a masters?

As said above, I love my subjects, but, I question the necessity of further education in either area. It could be a bad investment. The majority of students in my areas tend to join the civil service where a masters is not currently a requirement (nor is a undergrad degree, although I’m sure both would look nice on a CV.).

It is to my opinion that I need to both work and travel, before I decide whether or not a masters is actually the right decision for me. Masters in my speciality in Ireland can cost up to ten grand per year which is money I do not have (like most students who work before they can pay for their masters).

I also feel like I need a break from education. I am burnt out. I need to foster my brain in other areas.

My Summer plans

The next topic which I think I should be my summer plans…

This summer like all of my summers since I was 17, I shall be working fulltime for 40 hours a week. I love working. I am a hard worker and I love my job as I get to learn practical skills which will look good on my CV (I run the Saturday shift currently at my job).

Last year I learnt how to use realex for lapsed payments and how to set up direct debits which I think will boast my skill set (could benefit the blog in the future). I would love to learn more about the business side of my company this summer. I also can’t wait to get closer to the other employees.

I also plan a lot of self-improvement this year. I will buying a flyfit gym membership this summer as I hope to get more active so that in forty years, I have prevented health problems my parents have. I also am currently attempting to learn Irish so that is fun.

What are your plans for the summer and for May? Let me know!!

Primark Haul August 2018: Hits

I adore Primark. It’s my favourite shop to walk through when I’m casually window shopping. I also love how cheap the products are – I’m a student so I can’t afford more expensive labels. I’ve decided to write a post on what I bought and liked in Primark (penneys) in August.

This month, I’ve had a desire for autumn weather so a lot of my shopping has been autumn/winter wear orientated. I no longer want to buy colourful dresses or jumpsuits anymore. I’m loving the leopard print and checked designs which are everywhere are on the high street, however I didn’t actually pick anything up with those designs. My favourite colours for this season are definitely mustard yellow (which I’ve always loved anyways) and purple. I went quite crazy this month in Primark as I’ve finally left my summer job and for the first time since May, I’ve gained a lot of free time.

In my local Primark/Penneys I bought the following items at the beginning of the month.

For some reason this jumper would not picture well

I really love this red striped jumper. It is very tight fitted in a flattering way. Red is also one of my favourite colours ever so I couldn’t stop myself from buying this knit jumper. It cost €12

This Boyfriend style t-shirt only €4 and is of amazing quality. I actually really regret not buying a few of this top as the fit is lovely and relaxed. As anyone could tell, I have a deep love for stripped clothing.

Nutgrove Rathfarnum Penneys:

I got this mustard yellow faux leather skirt for €10!!! I adore fake leather skirts. I already have one in Black and I find the fit of them to be really nice. I can’t wait to wear this little skirt to college with tights when the weather gets a bit colder.

I have a deep commit to soft jumpers. This grey one caught my eye as it too was only €10. It so soft and fluffy that I’m very tempted to buy some more of them. I felt the grey was a nice colour to match the brightness of the yellow skirt. The scarf I really didn’t need -as I have quite the collection of scarves already- however I loved the dark grey colour of it and couldn’t resist. It’s a big scarf and only cost €6!

Mary Street Dublin 1 Penneys:

In the last week I met up with a friend for a coffee and we decided to walk around the shops afterwards. As usual, I saw items of clothing and couldn’t resist. I especially was drawn to corduroy which seems to be everywhere at the moment. I picked up some really nice items in this Primark and I am delighted with the gems I bought.

I found it very hard to pick a colour when buying this buttoned corduroy skirt and in the end I went for this pretty Amber colour. Like the faux leather skirt, this only cost €10 and I’m really tempted to buy another one as the material is great for the price. I picked the amber colour in the end because I don’t have any other clothes in a similar shade so I wanted to buy something new to brighten up my wardrobe.

I am a huge fan of the dungaree dresses which have become popular on the high street at the moment. I almost can’t get enough of them. I especially love it when they only cost me €13 like this one from Penneys did. Cheap and cheerful, I will get great wear of it (it also came in pink if I remember correctly.) Like the skirt, this is also corduroy style. I got this black buttoned t-shirt to go under the dungaree which cost €6!

Dundrum Penneys:

For the back to school shopping, I went to Dundrum with my little sisters as they start school this week. I went for the chance to pick up some more cute clothes. I didn’t have as much success in this Primark as I did in others but I did pick up a cute jacket.

I am obsessed with the corduroy jackets which are everywhere at the moment. I love the fake fur that they have on the inside – so nice and warm for the colder months, yet so casual and light for daytime wear. I struggled when it came to picking a colour as this jackets comes in so many different colours- white, pink, and the same wine colour as the dungaree dress I bought. For anyone who doesn’t like corduroy, this jacket also comes in denim style. I picked white for my jacket as I felt it was the most versatile of all the colours. This beautiful jacket cost only €25 which makes it a great bargain.

I really love the items they have in Primark at the moment. The thing I love the most about this shop is that it allows me to keep up with the trends while not breaking the bank. Did anyone else have much luck in Primark this month?

Tips for making friends in Uni

University is said to be some of the best years of a persons life. With opportunities to make great friends and to further one’s education, it’s easy to see why. Yet despite making many friends in my first year of University, I’ve noticed many people from my Uni complain on twitter about how hard it was for them to make friends. Making new friends can be difficult, especially if you’re going into University with no friends like I did. So I decided to write a post for those who may need it- for people who are like how I was last year, shy or unsure of themselves. This can also be used by people who wish to branch outside of the friends they already have.

I myself made amazing friends last year and I can’t wait to make more friends this year. I’m going back to Uni next week and I can’t wait for the year that is ahead of me. I discovered last year that by putting myself out there, and, taking all opportunities, I really allowed myself to meet new people. This post was written for anyone starting University this year looking for tips on how to make friends. However this guide can also be used by anyone returning to University- it’s never too late to make a new friend.

1. Student Union

One of the things that I would really recommend to do is to get involved with your University’s Student Union. There are so many ways to do this too! From becoming a class rep to volunteering at Union events to helping out at charity events. I made so many friends by just going to night outs hosted by the Student Union. I also went out on a couple of trips with some of the class reps. The student union is a great foundation base for making friends and expanding with those friends. My student union hosted S Club 7 last year which was one of the highlights of my year.

2. Societies

Societies in University is another way to make amazing new friends with similar interests to you. In my university, we have a wide range of societies from Filmsoc to Harry Potter Soc. The choices were endless and I joined so many. I would really recommend joining as many societies as possible and then sticking with a few that suits you best. Most societies host a couple of events a week which are great opportunities to meet people. They also tend to host a ball and a trip once a year. For example, the Harry Potter society on my campus held coffee morning, movie nights, and even a sorting ceremony. Their trip was to London.

Another thing I would really recommend is going away on any society trips if your university has them. The trips are often subsided and way cheaper than a trip usually would cost. A friend of mine went to Rome with the History Society and only paid for her flight and accommodation. All trips and events were paid for by the society. Trips are also a great opportunity to meet new people and bond with them quickly. There’s no better bonding experience than rooming with three people in Berlin. My personal favourite society was the Arts Society.

3. Join Sports Clubs:

I am probably one of the most un-athletic people ever to live. I lack both coordination and balance. However that didn’t stop me from joining a sports club in my university. I had a bouncing time at my university’s Trampolining club. I did this purely for the chance to jump around but friends of mine competed and even won prizes.

Every university has sports clubs. Most are the general sports clubs like hockey or football, but there also tend to be cool sports clubs which are very expensive to have as a hobby outside of university. For example, my university had Cave climbing, surfing, and of course trampolining as already mentioned. Just like the societies, these clubs also host events like coffee morning, balls and trips. There is definitely a sports club for everyone. Although it was a bit more expensive to sign up to a club, I felt that it was worth it. I got to go to Trampoline classes twice a week and I made lots of new friends.

4. Take all Opportunities

Here’s the thing, before starting university I was an extremely shy person. Half the things I did in university, I would never have dreamed of doing before. See I adopted a new mindset when entering my uni. I decided that I wasn’t going to hold myself back anymore. I was going to enjoy every moment of my college experience and so far, I have. I’ve amazed both myself and my parents at the opportunities I’ve allowed myself to take part in. So my biggest piece of advice for making friends in university, is push your limits. For example, I have a huge fear of heights so this year I am trying to battle it by joining the rock climbing sports club.

5. Go to Fresher’s Events:

Another great way which I made friends in my first year was by attending all of the events which my University hosted during Fresher’s week. From Speed Friending to Nightouts in clubs, there was plenty of opportunities to meet new people before classes actually began. My university brought in rides too. During Fresher’s week, societies often host events during this week to allow new students to taste what the societies can offer to students. A good one I went to last year was a karaoke event by the Musical Society. I would really recommend attending these events as they gives students the opportunity to become friends.

6. Host Pre-Drinks:

Don’t get me wrong, I love going to clubs. However, I much more enjoy the pre-drinking which comes before the club. It’s at Pre-Drinks (prinks) that you can have a good chat with your new Uni buddies and bond with them while singing along to your favourite songs. The nicest pictures are taken at pre-drinks along with the best memories. Like with the post club food time, pre-drinks are a perfect opportunity to make new friends- it’s intimate and much calmer than the club. At the club, the music is loud and perfect for dancing. However, in the club it’s possible to have a good chat.

Hosting pre-drinks is something I’d really recommend all Freshers try and do. If you live in dorms, invite your roommates and your neighbours. Invite the people you sat with in your seminars. Invite that person who seemed nice. Not only will hosting pre-drinks give you an opportunity to make new friends, it also will get you invited to other people’s nightouts. Often when I invite a friend to a pre-drinks, they will automatically invite me to their next event or night out. Hosting Pre-drinks allows people to consider you when they’re heading out themselves.

7. Use Social Media:

Now, some people may find this suggestion to be a bit odd, however, trust me on this one: it works. Basically my best friend from Uni I met through twitter. She had tweeted asking if anyone was doing the same course as her. I DM’d her and we hit it off. Two semesters, one holiday, and, many nights out later, we’re looking forward to sharing many lectures and seminars together (we coincidentally signed up for the same Tuesday 5pm seminar).

Social media- as many people on this website may know- is amazing for branching out and meeting new people. This can be applied to most forms of social media. You can use twitter hashtags – my uni uses hello UCD as their hashtag for incoming freshers. I would also really recommend joining any groups for your Uni which are set up with Freshers in mind. Most student Unions will set one up just for their new students to meet each-other. These facebook pages will have events and you can find people attending and befriend them. Another way which I would recommend is using Bumble. Bumble may be a dating site but it also has a friendship function. Many Uni’s now Bumble representatives as well.

Social media is great and can be a power tool when making new friends.

No matter what, making new friends at University level can be very scary so I’d recommend for anyone trying to make friends to always be themselves. People like someone who is genuine.

Urban Decay Rush Lipstick

Recently, I’ve started to love Urban Decay. My current favourite liptick is a cream one by them called Rush. I find that a nice lipstick can complete any makeup look. However, with my pale complexion I tend to be very hestitant when wearing lipstick. Bright and dark colours can easily look scary on me so I’m very comfortable with nudes and light pinks. I also tend to wear cream lipsticks over mattes due to how dry my lips can get- there is nothing worse than chapped lips.

Back in June, I tried Urban Dacays lipticks for the first time. I had gone to the store on Grafton Street (in Dublin) with one of my friends. This friend of mine is a huge Urban Decay junkie and she helped me pick out a liptick. When I first swatched Rush, I really felt like it was an easy colour for me. Something I could apply and wear with no trouble.

What is it:

Rush is part of Urban Decay’s Vice collection. It’s a creamy, pink mauve colour that has a slight sheen finish. Urban Decay’s uk site claims that the creamy Vice lipsticks has a butter blend which comforts and enhances, leaving the lips soft.

What does it look like:

Vice Lipstick comes in a modernized, luxed-up version of our original lipstick case that looked like a shotgun shell. It’s new, but speaks to our roots. The faceted gunmetal case has a gold base and debossed lettering, and our custom-designed lipstick features an embossed “UD.” We even added a shade-matched label (including the shade name and finish) to make it easy to find the right color within the depths of your bag.

What are the properties:

  • The texture is creamy and great for those with dry lips.
  • The product is long lasting.
  • The product is cruelty free.
  • The pigment and colour range is unreal.
  • It’s very easy to apply.
  • It doesn’t wash out pale skin.

With over a hundred shades to choose from, there is a lipstick from Urban Decay for every beauty obsessed person. Also, there is a vice app where you can try on different shades of Urban Decay’s lipticks to check if they’ll suit you before buying!

At €18.50 this lipstick can be seen as quite expensive but is honestly worth every penny!

What is your favourite lipstick?

Stationery Haul

Hello to all those reading, how are all of you? Do you like stationery? I hope so.  There are many things in life that give me a great old thrill and buying (cheap) stationary is definitely one of them. Although I don’t start University for another month, I decided to start preparing myself physically. By physically I refer to my habit of somehow always running out of stationery.  I got most of my current stationery from a Danish shop called Søstrene Grenes. Along with their amazing stationery, they also have lovely items that are perfect for an Instagram aesthetic! Seriously, check out their insta page!
